A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
